Utopia Bookstand

This project started from Utopia. By definition, it is an imagined society with perfect qualities. So, I imagined what it would be like if it existed. However, it seemed like a place with no willpower. Rather, the idea of chasing for such society was more appealing. So, I defined utopia and dystopia as ‘approaching perfection’ and ‘perfection’ respectively. This developed into the message of valuing process more than completion.

Then, I looked for supporting metaphors. Skateboarding stuck with me because it’s goals were focused on practicing rather than winning. I also learnt that the wear in skateboarding could be a visualization of progress. For the target user, I came up with Korean students because they valued result more than process. I tried to solve this by designing a bookstand that reminded them of their improvement. I achieved this by implementing a razortail wear design that would extend while the user read their book.
